Introduction to Atmospheric Storage Tanks - API Standard 650

Course Description

The course, which is based on API’s popular classroom version, is divided into 12 training modules as follows:

  • Introduction to API Standard 650
  • Explanation of Different Roof Types
  • Tank Selection and Sizing
  • Materials Selection
  • Design Factors
  • Fabrication and Construction
  • Shop-Assembled Storage Tanks - Appendix J
  • Storage Tank Foundations - Appendices B & I
  • External Floating Roofs - Appendix C
  • Internal Floating Roofs - Appendix H
  • Aluminum Dome Roofs - Appendix G
  • Marking and Data Sheets

The subject matter is presented using real-life photographs from various field locations, along with diagrams and practical examples. It includes inter-active quizzes to reinforce a student's understanding of the material, as well as an up-to-date glossary. Helpful links and information sources are offered throughout.

On finishing the online course, students earn 1 CEU and a certificate of completion from API. (Note: Completion of this course has no bearing on whether a student passes any individual certification courses offered by API or other organizations.)

Who Should Enroll

This introductory course should be most beneficial for new users of API Standard 650 and anyone responsible for aboveground storage tank design, inspection, safety, maintenance, and regulatory compliance.

Curriculum Subject Matter Expert:
John Cornell, Tank Specialist

For several years, Mr. Cornell has taught classroom courses for API on its Standards 650, 653, and 620, and is on various API subcommittees. He is the Senior Associate Staff Member for the Transportation Safety Institute. As such, he trains Federal and State Breakout Tank Inspectors for the U.S. Dept. of Transportation.
