The API Rotor Repair Course, based on API standard 687, covers the minimum requirements for the inspection and repair of rotating equipment rotors, bearings, and couplings used in the petroleum, chemical and gas industry services.

The four and a half-day program will cover such topics as:

  • Inspection, repair and manufacturing of used and new rotors for centrifugal, axial and screw type compressors, steam turbines, gearing, and hot gas expanders used in FCCU and nitric acid processes;
  • Inspection, repair and manufacturing of used of new fluid film bearings, and couplings;
  • Inspection, repair and manufacturing of used and new special purpose gearing;
  • Pre-shutdown planning;
  • Section of a repair shop;
  • Nondestructive inspection techniques;
  • Guidelines for acceptance of various inspections;
  • Straightening shafts;
  • Material designations and specification, their meanings and affects of alloying elements;
  • Methods to document and reduce electrical runout;
  • Mandrel and low speed balancing and stacking of rotating elements for centrifugal and axial compressors, gearing, hot gas expanders and steam turbines;
  • When to high speed balance and acceptance criteria;
  • Techniques used to document coupling shaft fit;
  • Steam turbine, hot gas expander and axial compressor blading inspections, manufacturing steps and inspection requirements of new and repaired blading, and assembly on the rotor;
  • Procedures for shaft repairs such as welding, undercutting, HVOF and HVLF coating;
  • Limits of various coating thicknesses to re-establish shaft integrity and dimensions;
  • Coatings to reduce erosion and corrosion;
  • Shipping containers and various preservation methods;
  • Extensive photographic examples of bearing damage, with potential cause and remedies.

Lectures will be reinforced by tours of actual facilities. Class size is limited to the first 30 people registered.
