Who Should Attend
The class was carefully designed for the following positions:
- Pipeline support people such as finance, accounting, environmental,
safety, legal and human resource professionals to provide a broader
perspective of the industry
- Pipeline field supervisors to give them a broader understanding
of the industry
- Recent university graduates to prepare them for careers in the
pipeline industry
- Experienced engineers transferring into the pipeline industry
as an orientation
During his twenty six year career with Conoco Pipe Line Company,
Tom learned the pipeline business from an operating company perspective,
holding multiple engineering, operations, economic, business development,
and joint-venture positions. He also served eleven years as an officer
of the company, five as Vice President and six as President.
Active participation in industry associations such as the Association
of Oil Pipelines where Tom served on its executive committee five
years including a term as Chairman, and the API Pipeline Committee
where he held multiple leadership roles, gave Tom a broad understanding
of the industry perspective. He also worked extensively with FERC
in areas of pipeline rate matters, PHMSA in the areas of safety,
and served on the faculty of Northwestern University’s Transportation
Institute. Tom served on several joint venture pipeline boards and
management committees, including serving three terms as Chairman
of the Board of Explorer Pipe Line Company.
In early 2004 Tom went into private practice consulting which has
provided another unique perspective on the industry. He is the author
of the popular book Oil and Gas Pipelines in Non-Technical Language
and co-author of the PRCI report The Role of Energy Pipelines and
Research in the United States, both published in 2006. Tom’s
report, A Practical Guide to Natural Gas Transmission Pipeline Economics,
PennWell, 2009 provides a road map to US gas pipeline economic drivers.
Tom is an active student of the industry and is currently working
on another book for PennWell Publishing tentatively titled The Final
Mile, Natural Gas Distribution Pipelines in NonTechnical Language.
